Vase cherub
Limited to just 25 pieces and standing at a height of 40 cm, the Putto Vase is a masterpiece of Meissen porcelain art that revives the baroque spirit of the 18th century.
The vase traces its origins to the legendary set of vases created in 1736 for Count Heinrich von Brühl - a true highlight of Meissen Baroque. Delicate rocaille, fine flowers, and winding ornaments encircle the bulbous form, while playful putti pluck small, finely modeled blossoms with carefree joy. As heavenly messengers, spirits of love, or purely ornamental figures, they embody the baroque ideal of lightness, joie de vivre, and refined elegance.
For the decoration, Lidija Schrenk drew inspiration from the scenes of French court painter François Boucher. His pastoral idylls and highly romanticized depictions of love had already served as a rich source of inspiration for Meissen artists in the 18th century. The delicate putti now appear as fine paintings on the vase body and lid - sometimes as flower gatherers, sometimes as Cupid with bow and arrow - symbols of the gallant Rococo world.
Boucher's art, still admired today in institutions such as the Louvre and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, is here reinterpreted with subtle refinement.
The floral theme was taken up by Beate Jach, who enriched the vase with traditional Meissen flower painting: small roses and lush rose bouquets decorate its medallions. With a charmingly light touch, Antje Funke has breathed additional life and grace into the little putti.
The Putto Vase unites baroque elegance, mythological symbolism, and masterful painting - a rare collector's piece that embodies the union of tradition and artistic imagination at the highest level.
