At the end of the 18th century, the manufactory's output was dominated by neoclassicism - a movement in decorative and visual arts that originated in France. The exuberance of Baroque shapes and colourful designs were followed by a more rigid style that was inspired by the architecture of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. With its geometric forms and resolute symmetry as well as decorative pattern in royal blue - a colour that was introduced to the manufactory's repertoire in the 1760s - this dejeuner from 1770-1780 is an excellent example of the porcelain works of this era. By contrast, the artwork for the 2019 "Limited Masterworks" reissue deliberately strays from the constraints of classicism and establishes a unique juxtaposition of stylistic periods. Inspired by Biedermeier paintings, detailed renderings of insects and clusters of berries balance the angular silhouette with a natural liveliness, extending onto the royal blue background as gold etchings, themselves typical for neoclassicism. It is this interplay of design and artwork that brings together two of the manufactory's historical eras to create a harmonious whole in a unique cafe a deux.
