Eagle Owl
In 2026, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (Porzellanmanufaktur MEISSEN) will celebrate the 150th birthday of one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century: Paul Walther (1876-1933). A member of the Dresden Artists' Association of 1913 and one of the manufactory's most prolific modelers, Walther created nearly 200 models in his Meissen studio, many of them animal sculptures that continue to impress today with their sensitivity and strength of expression, natural elegance, and meticulous attention to detail. His works embody an artistic power that goes far beyond mere natural depiction.
To mark this anniversary, the manufactory is reissuing some of Walther's most renowned animal figures-including the "Eagle Owl" from 1930-in a strictly limited edition of 25 pieces. Executed in subtle decoration by Beate Sommer, the figure conveys a penetrating gaze, majestic and mysterious at once, embodying the silent grace of the night.
With a refined sense for detail and masterful precision, Walther succeeded in capturing the dignified character of Europe's largest nocturnal bird in an impressive way. Select areas of the plumage are rendered with naturalistic detail in delicate shades of brown, enhancing the lifelike presence and elegance of the piece.
The creation of this sculpture falls within an era when Meissen animal sculpture experienced a true renaissance. Alongside artists such as Georg Pilz and Otto Jarl, Paul Walther helped shape a new naturalistic visual language with his designs. His works reflect not only the beauty, strength, and agility of animals but also the mysterious depth of their inner nature-captured here in the majestic form of the owl.
