Still lifes on porcelain are a seasoned tradition within Meissen's "Limited Masterworks" series. Given the challenges of painting such detailed scenes on porcelain, it is considered one of the most prestigious disciplines at the manufactory, and is only practised by the most skilled artisans. For the "Basket of Roses" wall painting, Meissen porcelain painter Christine Pasler veered away from historical templates, creating her own unique painting. A novelty within the manufactory's still life genre that requires many years of experience within this style of painting.

For this modern rendition of a still life, roses are arranged in a basket with fruits. The painting's warm colour palette, the transient nature of the image, and the detailed realism of the motif are all reminiscent of the Biedermeier period. The interplay of light and shadow coupled with expertly placed touches of colour create plasticity and a spatial depth that make the fruit and flowers appear to emerge out of the image. When applying the colours to the painting, the artist must work with a great deal of foresight. Appearing initially in dull tones, the on-glaze paints, after the final decorative firing, take on their variety of intensities - each depending among other things on the number of applications - thus bringing the image to life in a flourish of colours. The delicate golden frame and arabesques - both applied by hand - round out each piece in elegant splendour.
