Since the mid-18th century, Meissen porcelain painters have drawn inspiration for the decorative aspects of their porcelain artwork from still lifes painted by Dutch Masters. One such work of art by the Dutch painter Jan van Huysum from 1722 served as the historic inspiration for the wall panel "Still Life with Flowers and Vine". Van Huysum, whose paintings were already in high demand during his lifetime, developed his own unique, signature style within the genre that is characterised by exceptionally fine, suggestive brushstrokes. An artistic genius whose talent is echoed by the title bestowed upon him by his contemporaries - "the phoenix of all flower painters". It should come as no surprise that a section including both flowers and fruit was chosen for this porcelain rendition. The brushwork of the old master, the interplay between light and shadow that bestow the image with a unique trompe I'oeil effect, are only possible through a combination of different painting techniques: in-glaze paint, which merges together with the glaze at high temperatures, thus developing a brilliant radiance, is used to create vivid accents, while the finer details are created layer by layer with on-glaze paints. It is this intricate technique, which is carried out over multiple stages, that lends the historic motif its exceptional depth and photorealistic appearance. A painting that testifies to masterful artistry and skill.
