Oriental Male On Box
Opulent celebrations as a symbol of wealth and splendour shaped life at the Saxon court of the 18th century and gave rise to themed feasts in which lavish table decorations took centre stage. Magnificent centrepieces - entire scenes rendered in porcelain - were designed and featured figures that harmonised perfectly with one another but also with the delights of the banquet, both in terms of colour and form. Often conceived with a sly sense of humour and subtle erotic innuendos, the figures were intended to spark lively conversations around the table. In an account from 1753, more than 4,000 porcelain objects were mentioned, most likely also including this pair of sugar dishes designed by the modeller Johann Friedrich Eberlein around 1746. Like his master, Johann Joachim Kaendler, Eberlein used organic, figurative compositions to overcome the purely utilitarian nature of the dishes in an imaginative way. He was inspired by the imagery of the Orient, in this case the Ottoman Empire, and this inspiration is reflected again and again in the pieces' decorative details, such as the knob on the lid in the shape of a crescent moon. For this 2019 "Limited Masterworks" reissue, the painting on the medallions was conceived in much the same vein, featuring pomegranates and tulips - both important Ottoman symbols. The detailed miniature painting with copper accents is applied on the basis of a pen-and-ink drawing. Once the paint has dried, the green background is applied in ultra-fine contours - a superb feat of precision and artistry.
