At the end of the 1850s, Meissen's designers created this egg-shaped vessel which, with its bud-shaped knob and three paw feet, took inspiration from the manufactory's Rococo period. The vessel's sleek surface features artwork of an elf playing the flute, as well as an array of birds and butterflies. The sculptural blossoms connecting feet and vessel continue onto the surface as painted floral arrangements, while platinum accents highlight figurative details. For its reissue as part of the 2019 "Limited Masterworks" collection, this piece was painted using an unusual technique originally used to paint enamel onto metal bases: Limoges enamel painting. Layer upon layer of white paint is applied to the black glazed porcelain, creating more or less translucent segments and a striking three-dimensionality. This technique allows the porcelain painter to create an almost ghostly appearance. For many years, the elaborate style of painting had laid dormant until, in 2010, it was revived by Meissen's artisans for the production of a replica jewellery box from 1893 in honour of the manufactory's 300th anniversary.
