For the 2019 "Limited Masterworks" collection, Otto Drogsler drew inspiration from antique Japanese screens and wall paintings featuring cranes - a symbol of happiness and longevity in Japan - and applied this majestic artwork to a classic lidded vase that was designed in the early 18th century. The detailed artwork is created in a series of stages and is extremely demanding for the porcelain painters. In the first stage, the highly intricate feathers are applied in sepia. Then the black tail feathers and grey shading in the wings are painted on. After the first decorative firing, delicate gold and platinum paints are applied. The precious metals will attain their characteristic brilliance after an additional firing and subsequent polishing. Striking red nuances, which highlight the rich, antique character of the crane, are also applied during this stage. Reminiscent of a silhouette, the bird is depicted on the vases as it ascends into the sky, and is emphasized by the contrast against the cool, white porcelain background.
