In 1954, MEISSEN introduced this unusual vase design by the modeller Willi Munch-Khe that, with its graceful contours and striking snail-like shape, inspired porcelain painter Victoria Schmidt to redesign it for the 2019 "Limited Masterworks" collection. In this new version, Schmidt has created a unique motif that uses painted figures as both an expression and reflection of the vase's shape. For this, she drew on a comprehensive catalogue of coloured illustrations authored by the Dutch pharmacist Albertus Seba, who by 1725 had accumulated one of the largest cabinets of curiosities in the Netherlands. Seba had been fascinated by the wide variety and colourful nature of different snail species around the world. In order to ensure the accuracy of her work, Schmidt compared each of the drawings with her own personal collection of snail shells, allowing her to add further decorative details. In order to bring these shells to life on porcelain, the contours were first applied in sepia ink with pens and brushstrokes. Schmidt painted the multifaceted shading onto each shell individually, ensuring that no two are alike. She finished the piece by applying a lustre glaze made from one of the manufactory's oldest formulas. In the final firing, the glaze creates iridescent layers of metallic oxides, which lend the piece a mother-of-pearl luminescence and give the zoological drawings an extravagance derived from reality.
