Snowball vase with birds
What would a MEISSEN collection be without this icon of European porcelain art? Around 30 years after its creation, the great Johann Joachim Kaendler achieved a true stroke of genius with his famous Snowball Blossoms in 1739. The magnificent service was a gift from Augustus III, son of the manufactory's founder Augustus the Strong, with which the king wanted to show his love to his wife Maria Josepha of Austria. The lavish floral decoration posed new challenges for the master potter, painter and firing master, because then as now, each individual flower was formed by hand, applied to the vessel with a pointed tool and then individually painted by hand. In this year's collection, the Snowball Vase with Birds, created by Kaendler in 1741, has been recreated according to the historical model. Around 4000 pure white Snowball Blossoms in three different sizes can be found on the body of the vase, each painted with a tiny dot. The fragrant, fivepetaled Snowball Blossoms attract two very different bird species. At the edge of the vase, a native hoopoe pecks the sweet nectar from the delicate interior, curiously eyed by an exotic green parrot. A green tendril climbs up the body of the vase and adds a further colorful accent. In addition to the manufactory's own museum, various originals of Kaendler's iconic work can be admired in many art museums around the world, including the Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden and the Bavarian National Museum.
