Winter in Venice
At the end of the 18th century, a journey through Italy was essential for every man of the world in order for him to bask in the treasures of antiquity and the Renaissance. Venice, which had already established itself as a tourist destination and a must-see for travellers to Italy early on in its history, was always the first port of call. During this period, countless painter's studios were founded that specialised in city panoramas - a trend that would result in its own genre of painting . Giacomo Guardi was an important figure in this movement. It is his painting from the year 1835 that serves the historical model for the design of this vase: a panoramic scene of Venice in winter with a view of Santa Maria della Salute. To bringth is scene to the medium of porcelain, a modern vase design with ample surface was chosen. In its modern rendition, the hectic atmosphere of the original painting gives way to a calmer, dream-like composition. The colours, however, remain true to the cool, frosty palette of the historic inspiration. For this piece, a light-blue foundation is first applied to the porcelain in order to create a uniform, crepuscular background. Then the sepia paint is applied through a combination of pen-and-ink drawing and careful brushstrokes. Gleaming white highlights and gold accents on flags and spires bring individual elements to the forefront while also landing the lagoon city a representative lustre. The painting 's gold frame on the front of the vase continues on the rear as a delicate gold band, encapsulating the piece as a harmonious whole .
