Pansies
This Baroque handled vase is one of Ernst August Leuteritz's masterpieces and was created in 1860. As the head of the design department, Leuteritz steered the manufactory's creative output for nearly 40 years. Under his aegis, the Meissen modellers and porcelain painters drew on the manufactory's rich heritage, freely mixing elements and styles from bygone eras to create new forms and designs. In this period of historicism, countless porcelain pieces were created in a variety of neo-styles. Rococo Revival, the most important of these styles, is firmly rooted in the opulence and versatile design language of Meissen Baroque. Leuteritz kicked off the manufactory's second golden age.
Created during this era, the opulent handled vase is decorated with detailed reliefs and curving acanthus branches plated with 24-carat gold. These aspects are a contrast to the delicate artwork: field pansies - the first sign of spring - are painted on the vase in a naturalistic style with finest brushstrokes. Since the mid-19th century, this type of flower painting has been perfected at MEISSEN as its own genre. Year after year, the unique characteristics of flora and fauna are artfully immortalised on porcelain in ever changing variations. The field pansies on this vase were created based on flower paintings from a nature study dating back to the beginning of the 20th century - the artistic culmination of flower painting at MEISSEN.
