Swan service

Year of creation: 1737
Sculptors: Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) and Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1695-1749)

The Swan Service, decorated with baroque relief patterns is considered one of the most famous vintage dining services. It was created in 1737 for Count Heinrich von Bruhl (1700-1763), who at that time was the Prime Minister at the court of the Elector of Saxony and the Polish King Augustus III, and on top of that managed the Meissen porcelain manufactory. This dining service consisted of 2200 pieces and was aimed at 100 people. In 1742, this service received its beautiful name by which it is still known today, and since then this service has only been made on request. For example, the second Swan Service was produced by order of Augustus III and was to serve as a wedding gift to the Prussian princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg (better known as Ekaterina the Great of Russia). It contained some 400 elements.

The main motive of this decorated dining service is water, embodying the eternal movement of life. A relief, in the form of a wavy surface of water, is present in the entire service. Apart from swans, the other main motive, one can find many other mythological aquatic creatures (mermaids, nymphs, newts), herons, snails, reeds, sea and river shells, and dolphins.

There are several variants of this dining service:

•    White relief

•    Golden edge

•    Indian flowers
