The theme of time is widely used in the works of sculptors at the Meissen manufactory. Clocks, as an integral part of any interior decoration, as a necessary attribute of comfort at home, are presented in a wide assortment of the porcelain wealth of the factory. You can find wall and table clocks, decorated with flowers, birds or cupids. In this figure of sculptor Paul Scheurich, the putto sits on a sphere-shaped clock and holds an incredibly light purple flute. Putti are the image of chubby boys, usually naked and sometimes with wings, which can often be found in the art of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Putto (or Cupid) is a harbinger of an earthly or angelic spirit. Most often Putti are depicted surrounded by flowers, they recline on the clouds in the blue sky and flawlessly play music. The minimum pastel colors used by the sculptor reiterate the marvelous tenderness of these mythological creatures. The story goes that Paul Scheurich was one of the few leading luminaries at the Meissen Manufactory, who painted their own work and regulated that the production of his items in future should be unchanged and could only repeat the colors and style of painting exactly the way he did it. It is noteworthy that the warehouses of the Meissen manufactory still house an unpainted version of this "putto with flute".
